             The Cold War was a war that was fought without every directly fighting each other. It began when the two most powerful countries in the world, the United States of America and the Soviet Union slowly became enemies. Both superpowers believed that spreading their economic and political systems to other areas would increase their power. These two countries were extremely close to war in many different situations.
             The Cold War arose as an effect of different incidents. One of the most important issues that contributed to the cause of the Cold War was the United States policy of containment. This containment policy was to stop the spread of communism and limit communism to areas already under the control of Soviet control. Two major aid packages were the Truman Doctrine and the Marshall plan which both took place in 1947. The main goal of the Truman Doctrine was just to help other nations resist the Soviet Union's aggression. The United States not only gave countries economic aid but military aid. Greece and Turkey received $400 million dollars (Doc. 2). The purpose of the Marshall Plan on other hand, was not to stop the Soviet Union's aggression, but to help European countries recover from the debt and political problems from World War II (Doc. 3). European countries received billions of dollars from the United States to help recover. This money was given to countries to help strengthen democratic governments. It also helped lessen the appeal of communism. The policy of containment use by the United States on a major cause of the Cold War.
             One "weapon" that was used to fight in the Cold War was the formation of alliances. Alliances were formed because there was a great deal of fear and suspicion going on during the Cold War. One of the major alliances formed during the Cold War was NATO.
