Amy Tan was born in Oakland, California on February 19, 1952. Her family lived in many northern California residents before they settled in Santa Clara. Before Amy Tan became a best-selling author she worked writing speeches for business executives. She received her bachelors and masters degree's in English and linguistics from San Jose State University . The novel, The Joy Luck Club, was her first of many books. The Joy Luck Club shows the relationships between mother and daughter. What one wants and what we are willing to do to be accepted. Its about taking your life for what its worth.
             The point of view changes in the story. Each person tells their own story in their own way with their feelings. All the characters tell their story in first person narrative. The setting takes place in four different times and two different places. It takes place in china during the childhood of the mothers and the young adult days of the mothers coming to America. The story also takes place in San Francisco during the childhood of the daughters in the U.S. and in their young adult days. The daughter setting takes place in San Francisco or Oakland. The tone of the story to me is loving and at times sad. Although the novel is in English it has some Mandarin and Cantonese words.
             All the characters are equally important in the story. Three principal characters are Suyuan Woo, Jing- Mei (June), and Rose Hsu Jordan. Suyan Woo is true to life. She started the club because she does not want to forget her roots, culture and she believes that this club will bring the women happiness in this new unfamiliar land. Jing-Mei (June), is used as a symbol in the story. In Chinese interpretation her name means "pure essence and best quality".
