I'm Telling the Truth

             For many years, the tobacco industry has been accused, especially by non-smokers, of posting misleading advertisements across various types of media in order to attract or retain costumers. However, as a smoker, I feel that this bias is unfair to tobacco companies, so I decided to analyze a tobacco ad for myself. As I was browsing the internet, I came across an Adland webpage and an advertisement for Camel Midnight Madness cigarettes. The ad had a huge picture of a man at a New Year's party with a Camel Midnight Madness cigarette in his mouth and the slogan: "Ring in the New Year with the latest Camel exotic blend." Delighted to see that this advertisement somewhat related to my own life, I concluded that the advertisement is effective because it's illustrations depict real life situations, it uses honest slogans, and it only presents one false piece of information, the Surgeon General's Warning.
             Many biased non-smokers accuse tobacco companies of using false images in their ads because they believe tobacco companies want to associate a good time with cigarettes. With no bias, I disagree with this allegation. In Camel's advertisement, there is an illustration of a handsome man, just like me, partying hard at a New Year's party with a cigarette in his smiling mouth. Non-smokers would argue that having a Camel cigarette is in no way related to the great time the man is having at the party, but I believe there actually is a correlation. For instance, when I'm at a party and I begin to feel a little gloomy, lighting up a cigarette usually puts the light back on my fire. It's not that I am dependent on cigarettes, but they actually do give me a warm, jovial feeling as I smoke them. But yet, the ad relates to my life in one other way.
