Summary of The Book of Ezekiel
In the Chapters 1 - 4 of Ezekiel it is the thirtieth year and the prophet Ezekiel is in the midst of the exiles that are occupying the land of the Chaldeans by the river Chebar when the Lord appears to Ezekiel and makes him a sentinel for the house of Israel. In Chapter 1, Ezekiel envisions a stormy wind with fire flashing continually. Soon after this supernatural event, four mythical figures appear and are perhaps cherubim, which were described as having wings with the upper body of a human being and the lower body of a lion or bull. After describing the viewing of the four figures, Ezekiel explains how the Lord appeared to him. Chapter 2 goes on to describe how the Lord God told Ezekiel that he was sending him to the people of Israel, "a nation of rebels who have rebelled against me"(2:3). He tells Ezekiel that he should not rebel against him like past Israelites and their ancestors and proceeds to give Ezekiel a written scroll with lamentations, mourning, and woe written on the front and back. In Chapter 3 Ezekiel eats the scroll and God sends him to go speak to the house of Israel. The Lord emphasizes that the people of Israel will adamantly dismiss him because the house of Isr
The Lord God explains Ezekiel having to eat the barley cake on human dung when he says "Thus shall the people of Israel eat their bread, unclean, among the nations to which I will drive them"(4:13-14). After this sequence of events, the Lord sends Ezekiel into a valley and tells him that he will speak with him. Chapter 4 of Ezekiel recounts how the Lord told Ezekiel to get a brick and portray a city, Jerusalem and tells him to put siege works against it and build a siege wall against it. The latter part of Chapter 4 talks about how the Lord tells Ezekiel about his food arrangements. If Ezekiel fails to warn the people of Israel or speak to warn the wicked of their evil ways, the wicked people will die for their iniquity and their blood will be on the hands of Ezekiel. After Ezekiel sets his face toward the siege of Jerusalem, the Lord tells him that he must then prophecy against it. The Lord goes on to explain that if Ezekiel does warn the people and they continue to be wicked, they will perish and his life will be saved. During his siege, Ezekiel can only eat "twenty shekels a day by weight" at fixed times and that he can only drink water by measure, one sixth of a hin, also at fixed times. Further, if Ezekiel warns the house of Israel about the consequences of their wicked ways and the people repent and do not sin, their lives will be spared and so will Ezekiel's. The Lord proceeds to instruct Ezekiel to take an iron plate and place it as an iron wall between Ezekiel and the city of Jerusalem, tells Ezekiel to set his face towards the "iron wall" and says "let it be a state of siege against it. At one point in Chapter 4, the Lord God tells Ezekiel that he will have to eat barley cake on human feces. To insure that Ezekiel faces the siege, the Lord places cords on Ezekiel so that he cannot shift from one side to the other throughout the completion of the days of his siege. ael has a "hard forehead and a stubborn heart"(3:7). " (4:4-5) The Lord tells Ezekiel that after he has carried the punishment of Israel for three hundred and ninety days, he must carry the punishment of the house of Judah for forty days.
