In his two terms, Jackson used the powers as president very unfairly. By doing this, Jackson found away to get rid of the Indians. Jackson used the discovery of gold to enacted the Indian Removal Act in 1803 and signed it into the law, which required all Indian tribes had to leave and head west of the Mississippi River to Indian Territory; reservations in what is now present day Oklahoma. In 1830 the Indians were battling it out in the Supreme Court. A new law was passed that said Cherokees would be under state law instead of federal law. This allowed them no protection at all. The decision of the Jackson administration to remove the Cherokee Indians to lands west of the Mississippi River in the 1830’s was more a reformulation of the national policy that had been in effect since the 1790’s than a change in that policy. They tried to fight this change but the Indians were told they could not sue because they were not a nation outside the United States so the Cherokees lost their case. I think Wallace intended the story for audiences who were interested in that time period and the expansion of the United States.

In the late 1830’s, the Indian tribes of the east were leaving one after the other. A lot of the Indians had no moccasins to protect their feet from the rough ground, and transportation was only used by ones that could afford it, so walking barefoot was for some the only choice of transportation. Most of the Indians traveled without proper clothing for the long move across the country. The food supply was yet another challenge faced. The first of the tribes to leave and head west was the Choctaw tribe. The Cherokee Indians of northwestern Georgia, to protect themselves from removal, made up a constitution which said that the Cherokee Indians were sovereign and not subject to the laws of Georgia. After 1825 the federal government attempted to remove all eastern Indians to the Great Plains area of the Far West. It was more of a reformulation because Jackson acquired more Cherokee lands, he gave them an ultimatum, and he tried to persuade the Indians to move. They were ordered to leave quickly so they could only grab what they could get their hands on and were not allowed to bring certain items with them.
