             Have you ever been scared? I mean really, really scared. I'm sure you have. Everyone loves a good scare every once in a while. That's why horror movies and books are so popular. But do you know who is responsible for creating the horror genre? Very few people know that it was actually Mary Shelley. Sure everyone's heard of her famous novel, but few people know it as the first real horror novel. It deals with a very different type of horror than people are used to. In my opinion, it hits very close to home for everyone with its theme of forbidden knowledge. After all, who's not ambitious? Frankenstein is still one of the most widely read novels of all-time. It has been the subject of countless movies, some related to the novel and some very distant from it. Mary Shelley's timeless tale about forbidden knowledge is still very applicable in today's society. These three websites all offer very useful information in the study of Frankenstein.
             The first website is called the "Frankenstein Exhibit Homepage". It is divided into four parts: The Birth of Frankenstein; The Celluloid Monster; Promise and Peril; Frankenstein: The Modern Prometheus. It also has a table of contents, which goes into more depth for each of the four parts. There is also an introduction which gives background information on Mary Shelley and an overview of the novel.
             The first section of this website is called The Birth of Frankenstein. It tells about how Mary Shelley came up with the idea for Frankenstein. She got the idea from a dream that she had one night when she could not sleep (U.S. National Library of Medicine). The second section is called The Celluloid Monster. This page tells about the many different adaptations of the film that have been made over the years. The next part, called Promise and Peril, tells about the effects of the book.
