Philip Berrigan

             As Philip Berrigan walked the streets of London, Bristol, and other cities of Britain, he saw the faces of death from those who burned to death to those who were crushed from buildings collapsing; and if they survived, how they would be deformed for the rest of their lives. He became filled with exhilaration as British planes flew overhead to attack the Germans, "The Krauts were evil, the Krauts deserved to die. I was hoping the Brits would bomb Germany off the face of the earth" (p.17).
             At age 19 Philip Berrigan decided to join his brothers in the War against the Nazis. He was extremely determined to become a member and a force behind the downfall of Adolf Hitler. He never directly says that he was excited but one can tell just from his explanation and remembrance of his visit to his brother Daniel. During his visit to the Jesuit Novitiate in Poughkeepsie, he had mixed thoughts on god's fate for him. Yet, his passion and ambitions directed him to go to war.
             I wanted to join the hunt for Adolf Hitler, to hack him into pieces, and count the demons as they flew out of his wounds. I wanted to charge pillboxes, blow up machine gun nests, and fight hand-to-hand with my country's enemies. I was 19 years old. Willing, and most able, to be a warrior. (p.13)
             He saw war as the "rite of passage" for turning boys into warriors.
             As war went on and even as conditions became increasingly worse so did Phillip's passion for war, "I was frightened, not because I might die in some crummy army hospital, but because I might be sent home instead of off to war" (p.14-15). It seemed as if he took pleasure in killing during the war, for he was promoted to corporal for his marksmanship in killing the enemy. He felt that no German was an innocent bystander.
