The Ferris Wheel

Kate, a good friend of mine, has always been fascinated by carnival rides. It amazes her that average, ordinary people eagerly trade in the protection and stability of the ground for the chance to be tossed through the air like vegetables in a blender. Who was the guy who at some point that people would enjoy this? After he invented it did he decide that he should be the first to test out his new terrifying creation or were people already lining up to give it a go? For Kate, it is mainly the thrill and excitement of having survived the ride that keeps her coming back for more. No matter how scary or terrifying something may be, people will always be up for a minute of an adrenaline rush and pure heart wrenching terror that keeps them wanting to come back for more. Kate's first experience with a carnival ride was

Every ascent left Kate elated that she had survived the previous death-defying fall. When another nerve-wracking climb failed to follow the last exhilarating descent and the ride was over, Kate knew she was hooked. She had just turned three and the memory still lingers in her head like a catchy phrased song that you just can't seem to get out. The first ride on one of these fantastic beasts gave Kate an instant rush of adrenaline. Since the first time Kate's grandparents took her to a carnival, her fascination with these amazing machines is deeply imprinted in her soul. It was huge, smoky, noisy and just a little intimidating. A pause as the wheel reached the top of its climb allowed her body to relax in a brief state of normalcy. A loud crash vibrated through the air as the wheel reached the bottom, and much to Kate's surprise the Ferris wheel began to rise again. As the death-defying ride started, a lump in her throat pulsed like a dislodged heart ready to walk the plank. Although she is somewhat older that what she was when she began going on these as a young child, the thrill Kate has on a Ferris wheel continues with each and every ride. Each new rotation gave me more confidence in the enormous machine. A trip on the Ferris wheel never fails to thrill Kate. Even the dying sound of their engines brings to mind the great roar of a fire-breathing dragon with smoke spewing from its nostrils. Physically and emotionally drained, she followed my fellow passengers and grandparents down the clanging metal steps to reach the safety of her former footing.
