Rivers are another similarity that both countries have in common. Also in this region are the Central Highlands, a big upland plateau set between the Cambodian border and the South China Sea. Four of the five largest cities in Vietnam are on or very near the coast. Vietnam has four major geographic regions. Vietnam and the Philippines are different yet the same in many ways. Lots of lives have been lost from raging rivers and mud slides in both countries. In Vietnam, these mountains are 10,312 ft at Fan Si Pan, that is the highest point in Vietnam. Vietnam's two major rivers are the Red River in the north and the Mekong River in the south, both of which are navigable for their entire lengths within Vietnam. Vietnam's northern tip is a jumbled mass of rugged and solidly forested mountains that stretch out into Vietnam from China's Yunnan Plateau. Both countries suffer from bad erosion problems due to the flooding of the rivers and the heavy rains. Vietnam is on the eastern coast of the Indochinese Peninsula.
