sweeney todd

Sweeney Todd was brought to us through the writing of George Dibdin Pitt and was performed in the Talbot Theatre, on the campus of Nicholls State University. This production was directed by Dr. Stanley Coleman, his assistant Mandie Fuselier, and Mr. Walter Brown handling the technical director/set designer/builder responsibilities. The setting of the play takes you back to the 1920 -30's era of a barber shop operation by the titled act of Mr. Sweeney Todd and his accomplice in crime Mrs. Lovett. Scott Fremin who plays the part of Sweeney Todd puts on a tremendous performance capturing the aura of the times with his obvious talents. Elizabeth Holcomb plays the part of Mrs. Lovett who equally shares in the successes of this performance demonstrating true talent in both song and acting.
The set takes you into the times of early America, in a barber shop setting where most of the scenes come to life. The decorating and art shows the thought given to create an aviance that brings the audience closer to the performance for more enhanced enjoyment. The props, from the table ware, to the furniture, really shows the preparation that was put into making this performance take on a reality of what was being purposed on stage. The stage crew did a rewarding job in getting the various props in position on time to keep from slowing the upcoming acts, however there are improvements needed in performing these duties in a more quieter manner.
The costumes selected for this performance bring out the true imagination of what one would expect to visualize in a barber shop setting back during the times of early America. The costume of Sweeney Todd leaves no doubt in one's mind as to his role in this performance. While not all the costumes were available for our viewing, the understanding and preparation of Ms. Bernadette Dugas, who is responsible for costume selection is very evident.
