Affirmative Action
In 1996, Californians approved Proposition 209 with a 55% to 45% vote . Proposition 209 makes it illegal to discriminate on the basis of race and gender thus making California the first state to end affirmative action in public institutions. Racial and gender inequality is an issue that plagues America. As a college student and soon-to-be "real world" job applicant, its interesting and important to know our chances of obtaining employment. I believe in equal rights for everyone and, more importantly, equal treatment. Affirmative action is discrimination. Proponents believe affirmative action delivers a promise of equal opportunities and without numerical goals, believe racial and gender discrimination will continue. However, affirmative action promotes reverse discrimination and does not help the "disadvantaged." It is suppose to be designed to end racism, but its policies judge solely on skin color and gender. Affirmative action policies were established with the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The policies address "economic and political discrimination against any grou
5 The main problem is that racism cannot be undone through more racism. King called on us for a day "when there is no 'white power,' when there is no 'black power,' but there is only God's power and human power. " It gave equal employment opportunities regardless of race, cultural background, color or religion. In fact, it might even create more discrimination. Moreover, the claim that affirmative action helps the "disadvantage" is false. Quotas are used to exclude certain groups and setting minimum goals is the opposite of setting maximums. As a result, women, African-Americans, and others have received higher education and professional jobs. 2 Proponents argue these numerical goals are not quotas. Thomas Sowell, of the Hoover Institution, observes that those benefiting are primarily minorities from middle- and upper-class backgrounds. 2 Affirmative Action is positioned to open opportunities for those who would not otherwise have them - including white men. The idea that only minorities can add certain ideas is offensive because it is untrue and it implies all minorities think only a certain way. Affirmative action offers access to job training, vocational schools and blue-collar, police and firefighter jobs. In effect, affirmative action delivers the security of equal opportunity. Affirmative action needs to be outlawed and race-neutral programs need to be enacted.
