             Who is the real monster of the novel Frankenstein? Is it the doctor who unleashes a being into the world that has no chance of being accepted? Or is it the creation itself, with it's deformity and attitude? What is the true definition of a monster? The real monster of Frankenstein is the society that the novel is based around. It is society that compels Victor to make the decisions he makes. The creation is affected equally by society. Its through society's treatment of him that he learns the lessons and prejudices of mankind.
             What is the definition of a monster? Some say that it is a creature with a strange and frightening appearance. This is certainly how the society in Frankenstein saw the creation. But, society is the monster of the novel because it is wicked and inhumane. This definition could be based on the way that society treated the creation. This society made him an outcast because of his appearance. The society played the monster role in many ways, for both the creation and Victor himself.
             Victor Frankenstein made many different decisions because of society's ways. His judgment became clouded with aspirations of immortality. Society have him this dream because immortality is the ultimate goal for mankind. Victor himself says that he wants to "pioneer a new way, explore unknown powers, and unfold to the world the deepest mysteries of creation" (Shelley 28). Society's need for a cure of death leads Victor to spending all of his time trying to figure out the secret of life. When Victor finally does discover it, he begins work on his creation. After many painstaking hours of hard work, he gives his creature life. Yet once he sees the ghastly nature of this creature, the prejudices that society has instilled into Victor's mind become apparent. For society has taught Victor to be scared of what is different.
