Motivation
Every person in todays workforce is motivated. While the level of motivation they retain varies with each individual, oftentimes the reasons they are motivated are not so different. You could probably ask just about anyone what the number one motivator known to people in the workforce is today, and they will all likely come back with a similar response...money. Money is probably the best motivator to date, although quite effective, I feel there is more to motivation than just waving a few extra dollars in a persons face. The key is to first provide an environment in which motivation can easily exist. The key to providing an environment such as this is to initially understand what it is that employees want and need from and employer and their work environment. Without this understanding, it is practically impossible to implement a successful plan with which to create motivation. Motivation can not stand on its own in an environment where it is not backed by certain practices and promoted suf
Providing strong leadership in which you practice open communication, goal setting, employee development, as well as promoting encouragement, initiative and personal drive is essential for creating and maintaining a harmonious, trusting and highly motivated work environment. Taking the time and making a conscious effort to achieve this understanding allows management to tailor a plan for motivation specific to those needs/wants. To be very basic, trust forms the foundation for a functional work environment, thus providing great potential for open, effective communication on behalf of all parties, increased employee retention, not to mention increased motivation among staff members. Effective methods for potentially creating a trusting work environment and ultimately feeding directly into motivation include, but are not limited to keeping staff informed as much as possible on any situation, developing skills and practices of all employees especially those supervisors and those in pursuit of possible promotion, confront difficult situations head on and in a timely and professional manner, listen and exhibit empathy and sensitivity to the needs of employees and display competence and confidence at all times, this encouraging employees to do likewise. When trust exists in the workplace, almost every other aspect is affected in a positive manner, in turn, making those aspects much easier and goals more easily achieved. Strong leadership is perhaps one of the best non-monetary forms in existence that contributes directly into motivation and morale in the workplace. Realizing that with all of the factors employees desire from a work environment (such as a sense of belonging, personal growth opportunities and satisfaction that accompanies their contribution to a thriving business), perhaps the one thing they desire most is a strong leader. Leadership such as this provides clear, concise expectations paired with desires outcomes that are commonly affiliated with goal setting, consistent feedback to their employees, and finally providing direction, structure and a solid framework in which employees can work efficiently. Open communication, honesty, integrity, taking responsibility for ones own actions and strong leadership are all necessary for trust to exist. Trust is essential in the relationships established within the work environment and should exist within the employer-employee relationship, as well as the employee-employee relationship. It is derived from the managerial and supervisory practices you implement and promote, the manner in which they are portrayed and your direct interaction with your employees. This sounds like a monumental workload, but remember, in the grand scheme of things, maintaining trust feeds directly into motivation and in turn assists and enables the manager to become a much more effective and influential leader. Basically, in my opinion, motivation originates with you, the management.
