The book "Silas Marner" opens in the English countryside where it was common to sometimes come across weavers, who were pale, thin men who looked like "the remnants of a disinherited race". Silas Marner, a linen-weaver lived in a stone cottage in the village of Raveloe. The boys of the village would go and look through his window. Silas would usually scare them away by glaring at them.. The boys' parents said that Silas had the ability to cure rheumatism by the power of the devil. Eppie also says that Aaron has offered Silas a place to live in their house if they get married. Silas then leaves with Dowlas and the landlord to go to see the constable. Silas expected God to clear him of the crime, but when the church members eventually found him guilty and he was excommunicated. Around this time Silas notices Sally Oates, suffering the symptoms of heart disease and dropsy. Instead of looking at him with repulsion, the townspeople now give Silas advice and encouragement. Silas says that he will not argue anymore, and leaves the decision up to Eppie.
