native american stereotypes
Stereotypes are in the world all around us. In film, TV, books, and in everyday life stereotypes are all around us. A stereotype is defined, at dictionary.com as a conventional, formulaic, and oversimplified conception, opinion, image, or conforming to a set image or type. Well what does that mean? Basically what that is saying is that on an everyday basis similar groups of people are categorized by such factors as race, color, age, what they wear, how they act ect. The reason that many stereotypes are wrong is because of how oversimplified they are. Stereotypes chose one aspect of a person or group and link them all together. Many people take offense to being put into a specific stereotype because they do not express the way a person is personally. It is assumed that all people in a specific stereotype, act the same way, look the same way, talk the same way, ect. An example I choose to illustrate stereotypes, is that of Native Americans. What's the first thing that comes to mind when you think of a Native American? Or wait; is Indians a better name to describe them? I'll tell you what comes to my mind when I hear either of these words. Dark skin, dark haired people, wearing a headdress and moccasins. "How" is the wor
Most of the early black and white shows depicted Native Americans as savages and murderers. This is my preformed thought, that all Native Americans must look and act this way. Many Americans watch up to 3-4 hours of television a day. In fact, it was the Native Americans which helped the pilgrims settle in this country in the first place. Today they are "remade" every time they are shown in film or on television. " The show depicted Native Americans as having no morals, hating whites, and just being evil. Like all peoples this is true about some, but not for all. This is one of the first shows that actually portrayed a Native American as a good person. Typical stereotypes of Native Americans are seen in everyday life. We are essentially reinforcing our already perceived notions of the stereotypes of Native Americans, as well as possible creating new and different stereotypes. Somewhere, sometime, long ago someone created these stereo types of Native Americans. When we are taught this as little children it is hard to give this idea up as adults. Old western films are a good example of this.
