Pinko Commie Whore

Ronaldo passes to Rivaldo, Rivaldo takes it up the field, passes back to Ronaldo, he shoots, Kahn jumps at it but falls just short and the ball shoots past him and right into the goal! Brazil wins! Ronaldo has just won Brazil the 2002 world cup. The world is a competitive place, whether it is in sports, business, and school. To be successful in the world, especially in a capitalistic society such as America, one must be competitive. Competition pushes people to work harder, builds personal skills, and encourages greater success. In "No-Win Situation", the anti-competitive author, Alfie Kohn's article, he argues that competition is toxic to human development. Contrary to what this article states, however, competition is a vital part of human growth. Kohn states "that competition undermines self-esteem, poisons relationships, and holds us back from doing our best." (Kohn, 35) This is not true; what Kohn forgets is that when he finishes writing his article, reality is still there. Kohn gives no real argument as to why competition "holds us back from doing our best." He ignores the fact that competition often drives people to work harder. A stud

Worrying about not hurting someone's feelings doesn't help anyone. The untruth and downright ridiculousness and absurdity of this statement must be pointed out and cannot be emphasized enough. If he turns his paper back in and this time has a 75 on it, in a way he has lost as well, because he has failed to meet his goal. If that student were to run the mile a second time and his time increases by thirty-four seconds, he's missed the goal and he's lost. The world is a competitive place, and the only way to get ahead is to be competitive. Team sports like soccer, football, basketball, and baseball teach teamwork. In aiming to improve the time in which a person ran the mile, he is in a way competing with himself to break his own previous record. As far as the "psychological costs of competition" go, the psychological benefits cannot be ignored (Kohn, 37). This striving teaches a form of competition. " Because competition is a part of everyday life, sheltering children from it can only hurt their understanding of the way things work. The game could perhaps stave off muscular dystrophy. Those who win are called the winners and those who lose are called the losers (an appropriate term in most cases considering prior events to that word being said). Such a game is hardly adequate for the amount of exercise necessary for normal growth. While it is also true that he offers physical activities that do not promote competition, they also do not promote teamwork, to quote Kohn, "the whole affair" (his ideas on non-competitive sport) "is a vicious circle. Parents can't protect their children forever, eventually the children have to grow up; because, like Dory said in Finding Nemo, "if you never let anything happen to [them], then nothing would ever happen to [them].
