             Who do you think was responsible for the suicide of Eva Smith?
             Inspector Goole himself says that there were many causes for Eva Smith's death, and this is certainly true. The inspector also says that it was a chain of events that led to her death. I think the main cause for her death was not any one act in particular, but in fact her position in the world and the issues with class and social standings at that time.
             Perhaps one main point to remember is that none of the Birling household, and Gerald Croft, have actually committed any crime in the eyes of the law. This therefore poses many questions about the inspector's real intentions. All the characters did terrible things that had a huge effect on Eva Smith's life, but it is impossible to put the entire blame any of them. However, it is obvious that Goole was not completely impartial in his condemnation of the Birling family and Gerald. He seems question other members of the group more fiercely and lays the blame more heavily on some more than others. The most obvious reason for this is that the characters that show no sign of remorse or having learned something from questioning are given the harshest treatment from Goole. These are characters like Mr and Mrs Birling in particular whereas he is far lighter on Sheila and Eric because they are clearly both terribly sorry for the consequences of their actions and have certainly shown remorse.
             The first character to be questioned by Inspector Goole is one of the easiest characters to criticise of his faults, which are obvious and plentiful. He is pompous, over confident, but perhaps most importantly in the case of the inspector, he is a capitalist. This conflict between the socialist Inspector and capitalist Mr. Birling arises throughout the play.
