             In our society, people are identified by group categories. It happens everyday and has been happening since the being of time. We place others into categories based on their gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, and disability, just to name a few. But why are we interested in the differences in others? In this paper I am going to discuss a community of young adults with disabilities and their struggle to assimilate into a new community after living in their old homes for ten to up to fourteen years. I will also discuss the issues of the community with these young adults, the struggles within the new home, and their new life.
             First off, I should set the stage and explain the community. Four young adults with ages ranging from 17 to 19 years were living within the ChildServe Homes Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Supported Community Living Residential (SCL/R) child waiver. The company was suppose to build another house by October of 2003 and downsize all of their group homes to four residents by that date. It did not happen and the company could not get an extension from the state of Iowa. The move had to happen anyway, so it was decided to take the four oldest residents and place them in an apartment setting under a different form of funding.
             This decision happened quickly and within five weeks, these four young adults were moved into an apartment under HCBS adult waiver. Several changes had to occur. Most of the young adults had lived within the group homes for years and had only lived at their parent's home previously. Three of the young adults had grown up together for several years and the other in a separate home. Once they moved to the apartment and were funded under the adult HCBS waiver, these young adults were put into a situation they were never in before. They were in control of almost every aspect of their lives. They now have the opportunity to choose what happens in their lives.
