Hiphops Impact on Society
In The mid 70's a new culture emerged in The South Bronx section of New York City, little did anyone know that it would spread like a wild fire throughout the nation effecting not only the music industry, but Media, Fashion, marketing and advertising, and almost every aspect of modern society. It has reached beyond color barriers, and stretched past urban streets where it originated, reaching a status of a global phenomenon. This culture, this Movement is called Hip-hop. It always has been the voice of the youth even from its beginnings, which makes it an advertising goldmine. The Pepsi and Coca-Cola Companies have used Hip hop Artist or some reference to the culture in their Ad campaigns, as well as Reebok, Nike, who traditionally use Athletes to promote their products. Other Corporations have followed in the same trend. We, the youth of the United States are considered to be the Generation to spend the most money, so what better way for a Corporation to reach its Demo graph then to sell their products directly to them then by speak though their music. There isn't really a way for me to explain exactly how we have been effected by hip-hop without first taking you back in retrospect on its humble origins and show you how
Yo! MTV raps became the first All Rap show on TV bringing hip-hop to everyone with cable television Movies where being released staring rap artist and actually bringing in large numbers to the Box offices. Dispite this many police officers were out raged by this song some led protests against the rapper, telling the public not to purchase his record as well as telling his record label "Time Warner" to drop him from their company. For instance in the 1980's rappers used words like Fresh, or Legit, but now those words are called Played-out (out dated) even people in other countries who barely know English are fluent in hip-hop slang. It came from Atlanta Georgia to be exact. The movement started gaining popularity in the late 70's when the Sugar hill gang made the First hit rap song to reach the billboard charts. to describe the wild atmosphere in a Hip-hop dance club in Atlanta. In the song Ice T made it clear that there were good cops still out there and that violence shouldn't be taken out on them. Even the Street language that is used in the music has transcended onto the vocabulary of listeners regardless of their race, nation, or creed. And it later evolved to the music being more about the Rhymes that the Emcee said then the beats the DJ is providing. even then it was making ground breaking changes in the way we think, act and speak, even live. They started B-boy crews which was made up of a lot of teens trying to improve their break dancing skills. The song was directed to the bad cops, who were criminals themselves by their actions. It provided jobs to club owners' promoters and managers as well as rappers and DJs. The Final Element that is most commonly associated with hip-hop is the actual rapping or "Emceeing". Even with all the negative press Ice T went on to be one of the most successful rappers of his time.
