Divorce Effects

             When a person thinks about the topic of divorce, a reaction of pity usually turns to the parents, instead of the emotionally scared children. Although children often are not the center or cause of divorce, they become part of the pain that is involved. Adults feel many emotions of grief, fear, anger, and depression. Many children live with these same feelings that their parents go through. Children are often left with few explanations, which make the situation more traumatic and difficult for them to handle (Borden).
             According to statistics fifty percent of marriages in America end in divorce. Two-thirds of these involve children, leaving about one million children a year to face divorce. These children face many powerful emotions and numerous other problems. Research shows that high risk for substance abuse, sexual acting out, school problems, and potential divorce are all experienced by these children (Nakisher).
             When children sit down with their parents and hear the overwhelming words about divorce in the future, they cannot help but blame themselves. For many years, these feelings of guilt and sadness remain. For very young children, the lack of getting to know a parent brings a lot of shame to the situation. Not only do they wonder what their mom or dad was really like, they grow up hearing unfair opinions from the other parent. Not knowing what a happy home atmosphere is like can be intimidating for a young child
             (Walczak and Burns 108). Children today need a loving and happy atmosphere at home with someone to turn to when they need support or guidance on a situation. Parents should talk to their children or make sure the potential to talk is there.
