             New Census indicates Scurvy epidemic
Subjects of England, we have just experience our second famine which left thousand of Englishmen dead; moreover Oxford University conducted a census which underscores nutrition habits. The census revealed that there are three main components of the Tudor diet - bread, beer, and meat (usually beef or mutton).
There are three meals: breakfast, dinner, and supper. Breakfast is early in the morning with relatively simple meal. Dinner is the largest meal and is held between 11 am and 1 pm. Supper can be held anytime between 5 pm and 8 pm, depending upon the person's social class.
Everyone in Tudor England eats bread and cheese. The only difference between social classes is the quality of bread and cheese. The cheapest bread is called Carter's bread, a mixture of rye and wheat. The middle classes or prosperous tenants eat Ravel or Yeoman's Bread, made of whole-meal. The most expensive bread is called "Marchet", made of white wheat flour, eaten, particularly during banquets. Everyone also drinks beer, brewed without hops and not particularly alcoholic. Moreover, water is considered unhealthy.
The census also revealed that Tudor Citizens live off the land, keeping chickens, pigs, and perhaps a cow. Animals are slaughtered in November; the meat is smoked, dried, or salted so it can be kept for meals in the cold months. Vegetables are plentiful on the dinning table as well, particularly beans, peas, carrots, and onions. Fruits are available, too - apples, plums, pears, strawberries, cherries, etc. However everyone, rich and poor alike, are suffering from malnutrition, particularly Vitamin C deficiency (which we call scurvy); and molds in certain breads could also cause health problems.
