The Perfect Civilization
Civilization is defined as a relatively high level of cultural and technological development, but what does this really mean? This definition is relative to when and where you live. Someone living in Milwaukee today will have a different description of civilization than someone living in twelfth-century England. More specifically, the dictionary defines civilization as the stage of cultural development at which writing and keeping written records is attained, but this is ambiguous as well. Our cave-dwelling ancestors had the ability to carve things into rock, and some of these carvings even tell stories. Does this mean, then, that they were civilized? Civilization is not a term that can be defined in the dictionary very well, because everyone has a different image of what civilization is. Some say that now, even with inventions such as the telephone, the computer and Internet, that we're not civilized people. Some say civilization is anywhere densely populated, this is evident when people say they've come 'back to civilization'. Civilization is a difficult term to grasp, and the ideal civilization is an even more difficult concept. Wh
When the economy flourishes, the government appears to be doing the right thing. This can lead to problems because, as it's evident in current communist societies like China, the population usually isn't happy. Unhappiness also leads to conflict, so some form of entertainment must be made widely available to the population. In order to keep the population working hard, you have to keep the population happy. Because civilization is a term different in everyone's mind, it's quite difficult to have a general definition. The ability to police thought, like in the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell, would be a huge asset, however it's not very practical. Along human history, we've seen dictatorships of all sorts. Conscious thought has caused us to be selfish creatures, and so some form of government is essential to our survival. A form of policing people's privacy would be the ultimate form of law and order. This approach is somewhat communist, but the government will not follow a strictly communist regime. There must be no disorder, and in order to assure this, desperate measures may need to be taken. In the ideal society, everyone is equal in the eyes of the government. In the ideal civilization, conflict must be kept to a minimum. In any society there will be problems with order. Stalin's methods were a little extreme, and the fact that he reigned during the Cold War didn't help either.
