Marica regrets mournfully when her husband joins in the events of the war. Right
from the beginning of the short story, The Ring of General Macias, one can easily sense
the feeling of "anti - warfare". Marica sobs incessantly with the fact that her husband had
left her though she begged for him no to go. As Marica continues to cry, Raquel ridicules
her although one can clearly see that she feels the same way about her own husband
because of the events later in the story. Raquel also provides a safe refuge for Andre and
his loyal companion Cleto at the verge of being captured by the federal soldiers.
Although those events seem contradictory to the idea of "anti - war", Raquel's final efforts
of poisoning Andre proves her true feelings about war and what it had done to her and
Like The Ring of General Macias, Two Friends by Guy de Maupassant emulates a
feeling of being against war and violence also. Although the setting of Two Friends is
amidst a violent and perilous war against the Prussians, de Maupassant implements words
like: "rejuvenated", "blue sky", "jolly", and "brilliant" in order to give the prelude of the
following events a contrasting atmosphere with calm and pacific characteristics.
Maupassant then abruptly changes his tone as he foreshadows by using some
disharmonious words alongside the cheerful and lively ones. Words such as the "blood -
red sky", "scarlet clouds", or "distant horizon ablaze" evidently shows Maupassant's
feelings about the events later in the story. All of his words relate to his emotions and
thoughts about the simple pleasures of leisure among two friends or the frenzied war
against the Prussians and the French Republic. One might agree that the friends' act of
being martyrs during their demise is the reason for this to be labeled as "anti - war', but
