Chicago Cubs

The Chicago Cub's are arguably one of the most beloved teams in baseball. They are also one of the oldest teams and the oldest team to stay in the same city since being founded. They have had many great players over the years, but they haven't been able to bring home World Series Title since 1908. However, the fans still stick by them. The Chicago White Stockings were founded in 1876 as a part of baseball's National League. Their first owner was William A. Hulbert who also was the president of the National League at the time. A.G. Spalding was the first manager of the team, and he was also one of the team's pitchers (Cubs Timeline). Not only were they called the White Stockings, they were also know as the Chicago Orphans and the Chicago Colts before finally becoming the Chicago Cubs. In the early late 1800's the Cubs were a very strong team. In their first eleven years as a team they won the league championship in six of them (Cubs Timeline). They also continued their success into the early 1900's, winning two consecutive World Series titles in 1907 and 1908 (Cubs Timeline). The Cubs have not had such luck in the years since World War Two. They made their last World Series appearance in 1945, a

40 in 1998 to win the Rookie of the Year award for the National League (Baseball Library). Santo made his debut as a Cub in 1960. Billy Williams was another great player around the same era as Ernie Banks. He continued as a Cub for fourteen years until he was traded to the Chicago White Sox. He led the league in strikeouts during the 2003 season. Many baseball fans find this very unfair. One of the oldest and most famous baseball stadiums in America is Wrigley Field, the Home of the Cubs. After his debut game, he played shortstop in 423 more consecutive games until he was out with an injury (Baseball Library). Ryne Sandberg was the Cub's second baseman from 1981-94 and 1996-97. Sandberg made a comeback in 1996, but retired again after the 1997 season. Jenkins was inducted on his first attempt into the Hall of Fame on January 8, 1991. Wood went on to have a record of 13-6 and an earned-run-average of 3. Sammy Sosa is still on the Cubs, and he signed a four-year $72 million contract in 2001 (Chicago Tribune). Since then Williams has served as a coach for the Cubs and has also worked in the organization's front office.
