The French and Indian War

The French and Indian War was a part of the larger struggle between England and France for dominance in world trade and naval power. The European part of this war is known as the Seven Years' War. The conclusion of the war ended the struggle among the English, the French, and the Iroquois Confederacy. It confirmed England's supremacy and guaranteed its control of the settlements in North America. The French and the English had existed peacefully in North America for almost 100 years. By 1750, tensions were getting high as both counties expanded their claims in North America. The French controlled all of Canada. The French claimed an area ranging from Louisiana to the Great Lakes. They founded a string of communities, missions, trading posts, and fortresses to secure their hold on the vast amount of land. The English were preparing to move into the Ohio valley even though a Frenchman had laid claim to the area during the same year. The French constructed a fortress there to keep the English from expanding, but the English saw it as a threat and began making military preparations and building their own fortresses. Tensions increased for the next five years until the governor of Virginia sent a military force led by Colone

The British tired to prevent the colonists from populating the interior of North American that had previously been controlled by the French. The French were greatly outnumbered. He build a crude stockade called Fort Necessity and staged an unsuccessful attack against a French militia group. Only the Iroquois stood alone and tried to stay as neutral as possible. Most all Indian tribes allied themselves with the French. Pitt also sent additional troops of his own. The French and Indian War had many effects for both England and the American colonists. The English struggled and did not do well during the early years of the war. The Seven Years' War had begun and eventually pitted the British against not only the French, but the Austrians and the Spanish also. A large number of Americans enlisted. Many colonists resented this move and often resisted the efforts. He forced supplies, equipment, shelter and manpower from the colonists. The French countered with their own attack. In 1756, the war became an international conflict.
