The scarlet letter

Often throughout The Scarlet Letter there are symbolic references made. The story deals with a puritan woman who commits adultery and raises an illegitimate child named Pearl. The author, Nathanial Hawthorne uses Natural images to symbolize different points. Symbols can be anything that has an important meaning like shapes, color and even people. In literature symbols usually don't have an instantly recognizable meaning, but in The Scarlet Letter Hawthorne describes three symbols which are very important which are the rose-bush, the scarlet letter and Pearl. The rose-bush is an important symbol because it represents something beautiful and at the same time dreadful just like in Hester society. In chapter one, Hawthorne describes is at "...on one side of the portal and routed almost at the threshold was a wild rose-bush, covered in this month of June" The rose-bush symbolizes the ability of nature to tolerate and outlast mans activity. This quote

" Having Pearl is a harsh and difficult and her Hester's dignity if being watch by her society. convex mirror, the scarlet letter was represented in exaggerated and gigantic proportions . In chapter two Hawthorne says "on the breast of her gown, in fine red cloth, surrounded with elaborate embroidery and fantastic flourishes of gold-thread appeared the letter A. that look of naughty merriment was likewise reflected in the mirror" the scarlet letter is being reflected on a breastplate at the same time it shows us how time passes. Pearl is no more than a mere punishment to her mother she is also a blessing that keeps her alive. " It describes the child as a mistake or an outcast even though the birth of a child has to be a wonderful thing. Also in chapter one, Hawthorne says this "found something congenial in the soil that had so early borne the black flower of civilized society" The rose-bush also symbolizes the futility of symbolic interpretation. Symbols like I said before can be anything that has a meaning and they are a part of everyday experience. The three symbols that I chose I think that are very important because each symbol has a interpretation that goes with the story. lovely and immortal flower, out of the rank luxuriance of a guilty passion.
