the zoo story

             An existentialist is someone who has a different perspective or view from others and does not care about anything that is happening around him. Such a person may possibly exist in a fictional story depending on the author; however, existentialism does not exist in the real society.
             The Zoo Story, written by Edward Albee, shows that everyone has to be emotionally affected in one way or another. At the beginning of the short play, Peter seems to be listening to Jerry rambling on without putting much thought into it, but after the story about the landlady's dog, Peter starts to show his irritation. He says numbly, "I...I don't understand what...I don't think I... (Now, almost tearfully) Why did you tell me all of this?" This quote proves that existentialists do not exist. Peter tries to lock himself in his cage by sitting on a bench in an isolated park every Sunday; he even tells Jerry that he likes it there because he has the bench all to himself. As much as Peter may appear like the existentialist in this play because he seems to want to be separated, he still cannot afford to get unaffected at all. The word "tearfully" gives his emotions away to the readers since an existentialist probably would not burst into tears when he cares about nothing but himself.
             One calm Sunday, Peter is peacefully reading in the park when suddenly a random guy who is younger than him comes along and starts making him think that the word "love" should not be invented at all because of so many misunderstandings. How would the reader think Peter would feel? When Peter goes home that night, he would probably still be thinking whether his concept of love is right or not. That is called being affected by others. It is almost impossible for a normal guy in the real world to not even think twice about what the young man had said because that man just questioned
