In-groups

             From a baby, we are raised by people, whether they are related to us or not, it does not matter. These people influence our everyday lives, our decisions, and eventually our future. You might be saying, "That is not true, I am an independent." But ask yourself this, how did you become an independent? What decisions led up to your announcement of independence? Was it because you did not want to think like your parents, was it because you wanted to be different from them? No matter what, each person is part of a in-group, a society. In Gordon Allport's (1954), "The Formation of In-Groups," he describes an in-group in a static society as "being fairly easy to predict just what loyalties the individual will form-to what region, to that phratry, or to what social class. [...] kinship, status, even place of residence, may be rigidly prescribed" (p. 172) From my experiences in my life so far, I would have to agree with his theory.
             As stated earlier, when we are born and as we grow into adults we are in groups, usually these groups are the ones to which our parents are members. These groups start at paternal relatives, and continue from family of orientation and procreation, to college, to church membership, to profession, to state of birth, to city of living, to country of loyalty, to kinship, and even to what party a person will vote in during elections. From my experience, I am a republican like my parents. There are a few issues that make me lean towards democrats but overall I am registered with the Republican party. I am just now beginning to get into politics and as embarrassing as it is to say, even if I knew nothing about the elections and of legal age to vote, I would still vote Republican because that is how my mother, father and grandmother are registered.
