The Redwood Warrior Judi Bari
BiographyKnown as the Redwood Warrior, Judi Bari played a significant role in the conservation of the Redwood Forest in Northern California."Three thousand people from all over the country came to Redwood Summer [in 1990] and chained themselves to logging equipment, hugged trees, blocked logging roads and marched through timber towns"(Breton Page 31). This was the everyday of Judi Bari from the moment she entered college till the moment that her life ended. Born in Baltimore Maryland in 1949, Judi Bari was a woman with passion for everything that she believed in. She started her activism at the University of Maryland where she was enrolled as a student who really did nothing with her studies but concentrated more on anti-Vietnam War rioting. With this she dropped out of the University and became a blue collar worker by being a commercial carpenter. While she was working, she also would organize unions and lead strikes and by doing this she learned many valuable things that proved to help her greatly in later life. After she made the move to Northern California, she began her career in activism by helping mill workers fight their employers to get better working conditions. Sh
Judi moved from Maryland to Northern California for a change. So there are really no members but just a mass of people together for one cause. Judi Bari did a lot for EarthFirst! and EarthFirst! did a lot for her. This point I do not believe Judi Bari followed as well. I have never been nor will ever been in the shoes of Judi Bari. Judi Bari became apart of the organization because she believed in many of the things that this group stood for. The second action that she takes to achieve the first point was that she stopped tree spiking and monkey wrenching. I feel that she filled the roles of many people and did it perfectly. Mainly why I stand up for her and believe in this cause is because that is what she believed in and never changed her mind once about it. Judi Bari showed the world what many people just can't see today. She went to the front and not only voiced her opinion but did non-violent actions as well. This is what also put EarthFirst! on the map as a big organization that now had some pushing power. Judi Bari was very inspiring to the people of EarthFirst! and the people who knew and read her story. She was a woman who didn't look behind but only forward guaranteeing success for whatever cause she was standing for.
