Cinderella

The story of Cinderella is one that every child is introduced to as a traditional fairy tale. The edition of the story that I am using is one written by Fiona French in 1987 and published by Oxford University Press. This story is one of magic and mystery that can be enjoyed by any age group. We are enabled to make judgement calls on many different characters from a proud, haughty stepmother and her two similar daughters, to the beautiful Cinderella and her magical fairy godmother. The reader will be enabled to form opinions on the characters and decide what it is they like or dislike about their personalities. A range of emotions can be felt through reading the story and although alot of the emotions are not happy or enjoyable ones there is still the cliche "happily ever after" ending synonymous with fairy tales. This version of Cinderella, like most others, has illustrations. The child can see clearly in the pictures what they are going to be reading about. The pictures change in colour throughout the book and this reflects the mood of the book and also the person we are reading about. Initially we see Cinderella in bright colours with a smiling, beautiful face and her new 'family' in shadows looking sour faced. As

It is easy to fall in love with such a beauty but the children are enabled to see that beauty is not just skin deep when the prince is equally in love with the ratty looking servant girl who is same girl underneath the exterior. Each group will take it in turn and the rest of the class will try to guess what scene they are portraying. This lesson can be done again in groups of six ie. The class will either work in groups to complete this or if I feel that they are not confident to do this on their own I as teacher will do the sociogram on the board using their ideas and contributions. For example Cinderella how did you feel when your stepmother and stepsisters were mean to you? Stepmother why did you put Cinderella to work in the kitchen as a servant? Stepmother why would you not allow Cinderella to go to the ball?Stepsister did you really hate Cinderella or was it your mother who made you?Cinderella how did you feel when you were put to work in the kitchen like a servant in your own home?Fairy godmother how do you feel doing such good deeds for people? With this type of exercise the child will be able to take the emotion that they found in the book and use it in everyday life. She dazzles and sparkles alongside the prince and the others look drab in comparison to the beauty she radiates. The groups can then put on a performance in Irish for the rest of the class. Links will have to be made between the story and the reality of life so as the class can see that all people feel as Cinderella did and it is not right for anyone to have to feel the hurt that poor Cinderella felt. I think that although Cinderella has illustrations and can be enjoyed by children of any age I would personally use it with a 1st or 2nd class. The fairy godmother comes in a dark scene and appears as a warm bright light, she is wearing pink clothing and a smile, hope is reappearing. "¨"As soon as Cinderella entered the ballroom, everyone stopped dancing and stared at the beautiful unknown guest. This will allow the class to further say/write how they feel about the characters portrayed in the book. The topic of bullying will be really dealt with in this area and the children will be able to see the effect bullying can have on others and find out why people bully in the first place. I think that there is also more challenging words in the story for an older or more experienced reader to enjoy and be challenged by. The teacher will help the children working in groups and help the class to come up with new words to describe what they are saying thus extending their use of vocabulary as well as structuring their thoughts.
