International Community
With the end of the Cold War and bipolar global order, there is definitely an "international community" as portrayed by increased transnational cooperation and globalization. However, the integrity of this community depends on the actions of each individual member. Prior to 1989, the two great powers of the world, the United States and Soviet Union, countered each other creating a balance of power. This, in turn, polarized other states that fell under each respective power's umbrella of security and economic stability. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, however, the power of the United States led to hegemonic stability. International organizations facilitate the economic and political balance of power. In essence, international organizations exist but their practicality and relevance is limited and at the mercy of the hegemon. If there are no restrictions on states' military capabilities, the state with military superiority will dominate all facets of global affairs; both political and economic. As described by Robert Kagan in Paradise and Power, Americans are "less inclined to act through international institutions such as the United Nations, less inclined to work co-operatively with other nations to pursue common goals, more skeptical about international law, and more willing to operate outside its strictures". Such destruction, however, is crucial and inevitable because the threats of the 21st century do not play fair. For example, despite US-based multi-national corporations' independence of American laws through internationaloperations, any restrictions imposed upon them by the US government could adversely affect that particular corporation's interest in another state. States' international agendas are no longer dominated by military security. This may lead to the other state's economic suffering even though the policy is applied domestically within the US. They try to influence others through subtlety and indirection. o, however, the reason isolationists promoted self-reliance and separation from global issues. As mentioned before, international collective security is only as strong as the actors who adhere to its standards, and the United States can support or destroy the integrity of the system.
