             Holden's Foul-Mouth: Does it have reasoning?
             A cuss is considered a word that isn't necessarily needed... in fact using a digression in most cultures is highly looked down upon. For Holden Caulfield, this fact doesn't ever seem to cross his mind. Most teens use swears or digressions for no set reason(s), but for Holden, the usage of these words is a result from the world-happenings around him, and the need to "fit in". Holden doesn't swear because it's cool, or because it makes him look like a "bigger person", but for the reason that the world around him is changing very rapidly, he is becoming a man of his own. This man he is becoming is not only angry, but very lonely. We eventually can infer that this is the very reason why Holden feels the need to use the language he does.
             First, and for the obvious reason, it seems to me that Holden uses blaspheme due to the fact that he is a very angry person. Someone doesn't become angry for a simple reason, but more because of many occurrences. One of the topics that factors into Holden's anger is failure. Holden's failure comes from his inconsistency in his education, and consistent disappointment to his family. Getting expelled from Pencey University, Holden's fourth school is forced to become a secret from his parents because of the fact that he is clueless of how his parents will react. "I have a feeling that you're riding for some kind of terrible, terrible fall .... The whole arrangement's designed for men who, at some time or other in their lives, were looking for something their own environment couldn't supply them with, so they gave up looking." This occurs in chapter 24 when Holden speaks with Mr. Antolini, where I saw the peak of Holden's instability. He finishes his conversation with his younger sister and leaves his apartment, with Phoebe's Christmas money in his pocket. This is where...
