The Quiet and Diligent Scriven
The short story "Bartleby, The Scrivener" is told from the point of view of the Lawyer. The Lawyer is the main character, the head of the business, and the employer of Bartleby. By having the story told from this perspective we receive a detailed and subjective account of the story, seeing Bartleby in a different light and allowing us to see how another person views him and interacts with him. Bartleby is a worker hired by the lawyer to work for his firm as a copyist. He is a very quiet man who doesn't say much than, "I would prefer not to." At first he was a great worker, but as the story moves on, he stops his work entirely and just literally lives at the office. This would definitely make an employer mad. Although Bartleby seemed as though he was a great and diligent worker, in the end he is nothing more than a dead scrivener. As we begin, the Lawyer's attitude towards Bartleby is actually a slight sense of discomfort and anxiety; in fact, at times we get the idea that the Lawyer is actually afraid of Ba
Bartleby had to be physically removed from the office by the authorities. M response is that the two characters are quite similar indeed. He has never met anyone quite like Bartleby and his lack of knowledge is unsettling to him. rtleby, not raw fear, but fear at the fact that Bartleby is unusual and the Lawyer doesn't fully understand him. When I came to the end of the story I decided that I did in fact trust the narrator. For instance, when the lawyer realizes that Bartleby is living in the office, he doesn't understand how someone could do this. Though Bartleby wouldn't reveal anything about himself or why he wouldn't leave the office the lawyer felt guilt for his imprisonment. " I feel this way because through the story it tells how he is a successful lawyer, and how he has his hands in many different business transactions, showing that his business qualities are in fact genuine. This experience seems to have left an impact on him and his words seem genuine. My responses towards the Lawyer and Bartleby are basically one in the same. When Bartleby worked for him the Lawyer made no effort to help him or to step into his life in anyway; he showed no care towards Bartleby and showed no interest in Bartleby whatsoever. Yet, by the end of the story when Bartleby is in jail, the Lawyer does make the effort to help him. More specifically, we see the Lawyer's attitude towards Bartleby change as we go along. But he seems as if he is afraid of people and doesn't like much interaction with people.
