             The United States has a history of violence. Americans fought for their independence, fought with countless other countries, and fought themselves. It would be an understatement to say that the United States has a problem with violence and aggressive behavior. The nation sees violence everywhere: movies, television, video games, magazines, the Web and the evening news. America has nurtured and developed violence as a reasonable act of negative response. Violence, aggressive behavior which is physically assaulting in nature, has become ordinary in society today.
             No more have we seen violence in movies and television, then on the sporting fields. Sports and the United States have become synonymous with each other. Americans have embraced sports as a "national pastime." However this favorite leisure activity of many Americans is becoming more and more violent. The need for violence in society has to be satisfied, and Americans are turning to sports to quench their needs. These sporting trends reflect American society and today people live in a violent era, where people use violence rather than other means to solve problems. There are many reasons why the nation is violent; however, one main reason is the media.
             Professional sports, such as, football, hockey, baseball and basketball receive national media coverage. The media plays an enormous role in promoting sports.
