An Investigation of How a French Speaker Uses English as Their Second Language When Writing. In my English Language coursework investigation I shall be examining 7 e-mails from a French girl, Francesca Pacchiarotti, a French student learning English as her second language. The aim of my assignment is to examine the way in which Francesca uses English language as her second language in the written form and also identify common problems she has with the English language.New language acquisition is a lot easier the younger you are and this is because of the innate language acquisition ability that is present in children. Another explanation for this is because younger people have little to focus on whereas older people have many other responsibilities and occupations. However, in England, we tend not to have access to a foreign language until high school and at this stage language acquisition becomes harder because they do not have regular access to it, possibly once or twice a week.'Nothing will ever make learning languages easy' this was said be Henry Sweet in 1899 and to this day nothing has been invented to make learning a language, even one's first,
I'm load of things to do E-mail 42 I spent my birthday at my friends I passed my birthday at my friends E-mail 103 I'll be 18 years old I'll have 18 years old E-mail 104 Sorry I didn't reply to you quickly Sorry I didn't reply you soon E-mail 65 They are showing Beverly hills again They are giving the replica of Beverly hills. ' So, I cannot understand why she has use 'I am'. I could also question the reliability of the data as Francesca could have copied the more difficult phrases from a dictionary or text book. Francesca is a fluent French speaker, she will therefore use different grammatical and constructional rule that cannot just be forgotten when applying them to a new language. Delexical structures contribute to the impression of fluency in English by a foreign user. When I read it I assume that she means that they are repeating the series. In the sentence, ' it took you less than a second' she is describing an event that, in context of the E-mail, should be in the future. If she had used this instead 'I am watching' would be correct and she could also have used the present perfect continuous as well, both that and the present would work. The use of the present perfect is needed because she doesn't want to state a specific time. However, there are three particular occasions when her choice of words would effect the readers understanding on her topic. I came up with several alternatives. I So I would presume that she just doesn't know when to use either of the verbs. Target Utterance - Sorry I didn't reply to you quickly What she wrote - Sorry I didn't reply you soonThis could also be classed as her literally translating as in French you would say ' ecriver moi' (write me) or 'repondre moi' (reply me) However, in French this is expectable because they do not need the indirect object of 'to' after an intransitive verb. Francesca has the opportunity to practise English at home as her parents, although not fluent, have a sound grasp of English.
