Gattaca

             In the not too distant world of Gattaca, the population is split into two distinct social groups, the "valids" who are the genetically altered men and women who are supposedly specimens of human perfection and the "invalids" or "Godchildren" whose genetic makeup is left entirely up to nature. The invalids are viewed as inferior by the valids and are given least desirable and least intellectually demanding jobs.
             Vincent, a Godchild with a serious heart condition, is reduced to an Invalid who uses the blood of a Valid to access opportunities otherwise forbidden to invalids such as himself. Jerome, a Valid confined to a wheelchair after being hit by a car, provides Vincent with his blood in return for a part of Vincent's earnings. With Jerome's blood Vincent gets a job at Gattaca, the leading aerospace organisation and eventually achieved his dream of going to the stars. Jerome, on the other hand, can no longer deal with life as a crippled Valid and kills himself.
             The moral of the movie is clear: what matters is in fact effort, perseverance and determination in accomplishing one's goals, not the quality or source of a person's DNA. This is captured nicely in a final scene in which Vincent once again plays a game of chicken with his genetically engineered brother Anton. The two set out from shore swimming side by side until one turns around from fear of not being able to make it back. Anton, engineered with superior physical capacities, has won against Vincent every time when they swim, except for once. With Anton trying to prove to himself that Vincent's one previous win was only a fluke, they compete one last time. Unable to go on any further, Anton stops swimming and asks, 'How are you doing this Vincent?' Vincent replies, 'this is how I did it Anton: I never saved anything for the swim back'.
