Critical Thinking Case Study -

Faith Community Hospital is facing numerous issues as the staff and management have fused their religious beliefs with their work. Clearly, the purpose and the meaning of the mission statement has not been communicated to every employee of the organization. As a result, the hospital has run into numerous problems. We would first have to list these problems before identifying solutions for implementation.1. Even though the hospital is non-profit, the costs are increasing which makes it more difficult for the hospital to pay its bills. The problem is aggravated by the reduction in the number of patients. 2. The hospital name and its mission clearly signify the spiritual value and heritage and hence it is understandable that most of the patients and the staff have the same value. However, these beliefs should not be allowed to blend in with the service that is provided or received. This major issue has resulted in social organizations threatening to file charges.3. The hospital also does not seem to have standard operating procedures. Proper procedures need to be instituted in place to prevent pharmacists from filing uninsured prescriptions and so on. So, the cause and effect diagram could be utilized to graphically represent the problem and causes and identify prescription for remedy. Patients should also be encouraged to complete a survey to help management better understand their needs. Management should also ensure that the hospital's mission percolates to the employees in the correct form and meaning. The goals could be considered achieved when management sees an improved financial condition, improved patient and employee satisfaction. As a part of the review, the employee would also receive feedback on his performance, which would allow him to understand his mistakes and exceed the expectations of the management in future. To prevent this from happening again, the employees need to undergo a training that would help them understand their roles and responsibilities. The hospital also lacks proper performance evaluation and feedback. The high fixed costs need to be addressed and so as the affiliations with the insurance companies and regulators. If this happens, the fixed cost would be spread over a larger patient base resulting in better cash flow. They would have to understand that religious beliefs are personal beliefs and should not have an influence of the way they provide the service to the patients. In addition, management needs to institute training program of employees that would help them understand their roles and responsibilities. Had this existed, people would not be repeating their mistakes repeatedly.
