Essay Genre

A documentary by definition is according to the Academy Rule 12 of the rules for the Academy Award: a non-fictional movie. Documentaries are films made for the sole purpose of persuasion, designed chiefly to get the viewer to see the makers point of view or the point of view they are presenting. Documentaries often have a narrator who helps the story or is the driving force for the whole film, but this is not always so.Documentaries can occupy one or more of four broad categories, these are, Journalistic which involves information and analysis. Social Comment, documentaries which reveal problems within society. Educational, which concern themselves with entertainment but main objective is to teach. And finally Magazine which according to 'Film Study Collection: Genres' is a variety of short documentaries and newsreel essays included in a single program with a studio host. The two documentaries being concentrated on in this essay are both social comment.Bowling for Columbine is a fast paced, in your face documentary that uses very fast and often questionable editing to provide a visual bombardment of images to get its point across. Critically acclaimed director Michael Moore shocks the viewer into his point of view. He use

Cunnumulla follows the lives of its subjects for several months, almost a year; as they grow and develop. The institutions that show these Documentaries have on average a more academic, thinking audience, and although they only receive ten percent of total profits in the industry they fill a widening void in the market. The ABC prides itself on its more educated audience; it is "unashamedly unpopular. Combined with facts Bowling for Columbine also uses strong images from the security cameras of the Columbine school shooting. It has been suggested by Australian business people in the past that this would have serious monetary ramifications for Australia. The camera captures the people in their natural environment saying what they are thinking and doing what they do every day. s mini-interviews with people associated with the topic of gun violence, and school shootings, to give the viewer a persuasive taste of what Michael Moore is presenting. If Cunnumulla where to be viewed by persons of another country it would most likely lead them to think that much of Australia is like the depicted town. Car radio is also used in one of the most memorable moments of the documentary, where the radio is synchronized perfectly to the cull of a dog. He makes strong use of extreme close-ups to give us the feeling of connection with characters. CB Radio conversations are also used as background sound. Cunnumulla is slow paced, much like the country town it is set in. It would however offend the patriotism of a lot of Americans and would be less popular in the USA. Bowling for Columbine would appeal chiefly to most nations. It is anticipated that non Australians viewing this documentary would not view it as an expose of people living on the fringe of society but of Australia in general.
