Paper on Stem Cell Research

This manuscript aims to present an overview of what stems cells are, what is stem cell research, the research and developments, the pros and cons, applications for stem cell usage, ethical considerations, and the future of stem cell research. What are the different types of stem cells, and where do they come from? What is the potential for new medical treatments, and what treatments would be available using stem cells? What research is needed to make such treatments a reality?
Stem Cell Research - What's all the hype about?
What exactly is stem cell research? We have all heard about it, but what do we really know? Does everyone understand the positive effects that stem cell research could have? Do we have a moral or ethical dilemma when it comes to stem cell research? These are a few questions that will be raised in this manuscript. "Research on stem cells is advancing knowledge about how an organism develops from a single cell and how healthy cells replace damaged cells in adult organisms. This promising area of science is also leading scientists to investigate the possibility of cell-based therapies to treat disease" (1)
There are some very unique things about stem cells. First, stem cells differ from all other cells in the body. All stem cells, regardless of where they come from, have three general properties: stem cells are "are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods"; stem cells are unspecialized; lastly, stem cells can "give rise to specialized cell types." For example, an unspecialized stem cell would be like a blank (for this example, we'll use an organ). There is nothing to it; it's there, it exists, but it doesn't have a purpose yet. However, once the unspecialized stem cell is directed, it can become a specialized cell type, such as heart muscle cells, blood cells, nerve cells, etc. One of the main objectives of Stem Cell research is trying to understand the two properties of stem cells that
