jazz

I attended the Jazz Concert on March 18, 2004 at 7pm.The bands that performed where the GCC band and "Friday At 2PM". The opening band was the GCC Jazz band followed by "Friday At 2PM". Both had an exceptional performs especially the "Friday At 2PM" group. Each band performed a famous piece written by legends like "Dizzy Gillespie" and Stan Getz. The GCC band performed a total of three pieces and "Friday At 2PM" performed two. The group was a sextet, with a drum set, bass, guitar, soprano saxophone, piano, and a trumpet as the lead. The opening piece performed by the GCC band was the beginning of the concert. It was not introduced, the band went right into playing it, therefore I did not know the name of it, but I had an opportunity to hear it and there fore I can elaborate on it to give some kind of description on how it sounded. This piece started out at a vivace tempo with somewhere between mezzo forte and forte dynamics. Theme I started out with the whole band playing the melody for the opening of the piece. The saxophone performed the modulation piece between the trumpet solo and the guitar which was the second solo handed down.

This group consisted of 2 saxophones (Alto and Soprano sax), drums, piano, trumpet, bass, and a guitar. The soprano sax was the instrument that performed the modulation between theme and solos. Alto sax was the lead player in this group. The "Friday at 2PM" the entire band performed very well with minimal mistakes if any. Theme one of the melody played by the alto sax, with the accompaniment of the soprano sax and the trumpet players as the second voice. The soprano sax player on the GCC band was a young teenager who is still in high school, he has a great potential of becoming an outstanding performer maybe even a professional. The need improvement players where again the trumpet and the soprano sax. This piece was performed by the GCC band as there last piece, "Night in Tunisia", originally written and performed by famous trumpet player Dizzy Gillespie. The next theme was performed by the bass doing a solo then back to the trumpet & sax doing a melodic repetition of the first theme and then performing the closing. The piece was originally written by the saxophone superstar Stan Getz. The embouchure of the trumpet player was a little dissonant at times. The best performers where the alto sax player and the drummer. The GCC band the saxophone and the lead guitar where the best performers. Theme I went right into the solo performed by the trumpet.
