Vietnam

My first physical connection with her was in my mother’s womb. We shared this space, our bodies closely next to each other, and our hearts beating together, as we competed for our mother’s nourishment. She kicked me before I knew pain, and touched me with her soft, warm hands and tiny delicate fingers before I could feel. Our connection began from the moment the egg split, which will last forever, to the time we spent in the darkness of my mother’s womb. She is my twin sister, Katie.

Being a twin has emphasized what I think is people’s natural desire to work together, to communicate with people and to be in unison with people around them. Since I’ve always had my sister there to count on,

. . .
It is hard for me to admit that she did affect my personality as an individual. I have never had a birthday that was uniquely mine.

She has given me the best of what she has, her presence, and her love, for which I'll be forever grateful. Her influence started before birth, and will continue forever. At a young age when life was carefree and we’d spend those summer nights catching fireflies in the backyard, or waking up early to cover the driveway in chalk, we were inseparable. This is the time where I realized that I was something more than “one of the twins,” I was myself. She has from the very beginning, through the good and the bad, the laughter and the tears, molded me into the person I am today. It has positively affected my schoolwork, my relationships, and my athletics. Unknowingly, she has driven me to become a successful and loving person, something that seems unattainable without her influence. The word “I” was unheard of, it was simply “we,” or “us. ” However, people do grow, mature, and become more self-reliant. I know at moments I feel less alone in the world because I am a twin. it did have an impact on my independence, my individuality.
