The UML and How It Relates to Databases
The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is a standardized language that is used for writing software blueprints. The UML can be used to model a wide range of systems. This is largely in part to its non-technology dependent platform. 'The UML helps you specify, visualize, and document models of software systems, including their structure and design.' (Turney) The UML, however; is not limited to any one thing and can be used for more than just software systems.
In order to understand the Unified Modeling Language there are three elements that must be learned. These elements consist of the UML's building blocks, the rules that state how these blocks may be arranged, and the general methods that apply throughout the language. The UML is only a language and so is just one part of a software development method. It should not be the only model used for a system. If there are multiple models used, they should be in harmony and semantically self-consistent.
Things, relationships, and diagrams are all included in the vocabulary of the UML. Things are considered to be the nouns of the language. They can consist of structural/physical things, behavioral things, grouped/packaged things, and annotational/explanatory things. There are four kinds of relationships in the UML: dependency, association, generalization, and realization. Relationships are what bind the things together. There are also many diagrams of the UML which are used to group collections of things.
The beauty behind the Unified Model Language is that one developer can write the model while another developer, or tool, can interpret it unmistakably. The models written in UML can be connected directly to a variety of programming languages. 'This means that it is possible to map from a model in the UML to a programming language such as Java, C++, or Visual Basic, or even to tables in a relational database or t...
