The gold rush

             It all started when Jennie Wimmer's four children were playing in the channel the men had dug in the American River. Jennie was the cook and laundress for the construction crew for the site of a new sawmill. John, Jennie's son, had found a gold nugget, while he was playing in the channel in the American River. However James Marshall had taken credit for finding the first gold nugget. This accidental discovery of gold was the beginning many more gold nuggets were to be found. This one gold nugget, no bigger than a dime, would change America. Little did the world know, that this one gold nugget would not only shape America into what it is today, but also shape the entire world to strive for America's wealth.
             Many of the construction workers were very pleased to find this gold; although not everyone was as happy about the gold as the construction worker were. Sutter a wealthy German-born settler who owned Nisenan land, the construction site of the sawmill, was not pleased with this discovery. Sutter wanted to build a fort so he would be able to have his own personal empire, it was Sutter's dream, however Sutter believed the discovery of gold would ruin his plans. Therefore Sutter had told the construction crew not to let the knowledge of gold get out. However it didn't work, word got out and news spread slowly from state to state.
             The word gold spread across the states. Newspapers were filled with success stories of how men became rich over night by picking gold. This encourage men to abandoned their stores and businesses to go to Coloma, California. San Francisco, a small town of 800 people, nearly became a ghost town; nearly three quarters of the men in San Francisco had gone on the gold hunt.
             When word got to the east, many residents believed because of a tale about a mythical kingdom known as El Dorado had haunted the West. However, as soon as the easterners found out the rumors of gold were true, many...
