People in Salem

             How important and large of an impact can people have on the town and the people around them? Well the people in Salem, with their negative traits, had a huge impact in the society causing much hysteria and people hanged to death. In the play The Crucible, written by Aurthor Miller, it tells a true story about the Salem witch trails that show how people can affect the environment in which they live.
             Since most people had the negative trait of being greedy, they would accuse people to gain something for themselves. One example in the play was when Mr. Putnam would lie so he could get more land. Mr. Putnam did this a couple time actually. In act three Mr. Putnam tells his daughter to cry witchery on George Jacobs just so he could get his land. On another occasion, he agues with Mr. Proctor saying that the lumber Mr. Proctor got was on Putnam's land. Another instance that shows greed is when Parris preached about golden candlesticks for twenty weeks until he finally got them. It is shown from these examples that there was a lot of greed in the city of Salem.
             Another cause for the hysteria in Salem was from all the dishonesty in the town. At the beginning of the play Parris speaks with Abigail about the people in the forest running around naked. Then later in the play Parris completely denies that people were running in the forest naked. An additional form of dishonesty is when Mr. Putnam lied about his land. Another time dishonesty appeared in the play is all of the times that Abigail lies. She denies that the girls and her were running in the forest naked and about the spirit of Mary coming after her. She also lies about when she had an affair with Mr. Proctor. The above examples emphasize that there was a lot of dishonesty in Salem.
