             Jane Yolen evokes a mystery theme into this fairy tale setting type story by creating a search for the past of Gemma, Becca's grandmother. Becca's journey to discover the truth about her grandmothers past begins with a deathbed promise to confirm that her grandmother really was Sleeping Beauty in the fairy tale. From the moment in time in which her grandmother told her she was the actual Sleeping Beauty in her version of the fairy tell, Becca was set out on a journey of discovering clues which would lead to the validation of her grandmothers dying words. She eventually discovers a photo with a picture of her grandmother and another man, which leads her to a man by the name of Joseph Potocki. From this point on Joseph P tells a compelling story of survival. Through his story Becca is able to collect information that links her grandmother to her rendition of Sleeping Beauty. Through out the story he indicates all that is known to have happened to Gemma, through his experiences with her. I use the word "known" in the previous sentence for the simple reason of when Josef Potocki discovered Gemma she had no recollection of her past, not even her own name. So inconclusion the mystery is search for Gemmas past, and the resolution is basically the story told by Josef Potocki.
             The book incorporates all of the emotion that a true fairy tail should, and it incorporates them in a fantastic manner. It uses the struggles of the prisoners that were stationed in Chelmno as its tale of ordinary people locked in a mortal struggle with an evil of almost unimaginable strength, whom are the Germans. This story also has a prince and a princess in a sense, the princess being Gemma and the price being Josef P. Yolen uses their ups and downs
