Heidegger's Gestell
In his essay, "The Question Concerning Technology," Heidegger describes the problem with man and his Being in dealing with his technology. In reference to his works before this, Being here refers to the ideal self that a person is meant to pursue from his birth, and it is the state upon which we will be able to obtain ultimate satisfaction. For Heidegger, technology tends to diverge man from achieving his real Being. Heidegger first said that technology is defined for us as a way of means, but this is not essentially complete. He said that we need to know also the essence of technology. According to him, "technology is not equivalent to the essence of technology." (Heidegger, p. 7) Technology, in our view, is an object, or a complex of objects and techniques, that seems passive itself. We conceive of it as activated by us only. According to Heidegger, however, we are fundamentally mistaken in this; "we are delivered over to it in the worst possible way when we regard it as something neutral." (Heidegger, p. 4) The essence of technology is that it is something upon which humans themselves are formed and structured because we continue to depend too much on it. The problem, which he termed as Gestell
But in reality, this technology has been responsible to changing our fate as our own being. New developments include machines that are able to process logic for themselves and we see in them how they are able to replace man in his work. , translated as "enframing," means "the gathering together of that setting-upon which sets upon man, i. Technology gives an unmistakable indication of its abuse by threatening to become a technology deadly to the human race instead of being one of life. 1) Certain inventions out of modern technology have brought about health threatening problems to us, like the emitting of toxic chemicals in the air, the pollution of our drinking water, the destruction of our environment and the poisoning of our food. We may think we are in control of technology but the truth is that technology is also shaping us at the same time. 7) "The present destruction of the world reveals itself as the refusal to accept our technology of life. Several environmental phenomena like red tide and acid rain have been happening through and through have been caused by abuse of technology. Meanwhile, man, precisely as the one so threatened, exalts himself to the posture of lord of the earth. 45) Today, the definition of technology as applied science seems to be succinct and transparent, "but such explanations become questionable when they only theoretically prove the life-sustaining function of a phenomenon, whereas, according to all experience, it brings about our premature death.
