The beast in the Jungle

             The Beast in the Jungle is a story about two people: May Bertram and John Marcher. In chapter 1 you are introduced to May and Marcher. After 10 years they meet again at Weatherend, an English country house. Marcher is a man who is convinced that he is going to experience something extraordinary, and he lives in constant fear of this future event. He considers himself different from other people. He does not tell anyone for fear of being laughed at. Although he feels completely different from other people, he tries to be like them. May lives with her aunt. In return for security she renders services. There are other people in Weatherend, but Marcher stays away from them and doesn't talk to them. When May and Marcher finally talk to each other, you can see Marcher's confused state of mind when he doesn't remember anything about their past which shows his indifference and coldness towards other people. The fact that she knows about his secret makes them closer.
             In Chapter 2, you find out that May's aunt is dead and May inherited enough money from her to buy herself a small house in London. The meetings between May and Marcher increase, however there's no deep involvement or relationship.
             In chapter 3 you find out that May suffers from a blood disorder. With time her health deteriorates. The meetings between them continue they spend plenty of time together, they go to operas, galleries, and museums; however their friendship does not turn into a relationship or love. Marcher continues to be tormented by the idea that he has been singled out for an extraordinary fate. This eventually becomes a compulsive fantasy for him. Marcher's apprehension and obsession and Mary's illness continue through chapter 4. As Mary gets closer to death, she is getting weak and fragile due to her illness.
