When I was six years old, my father made a major decision in his life that has ultimately influenced my life and the career goals that I have. After working in the business industry for nine years, he returned to college to pursue his dream of becoming a registered nurse. I remember sitting with him while he studied for his tests, and I even remember going with him on campus to speak with his professors. He eventually became a registered nurse, and through listening to his experiences, I began learning a lot about the nursing profession. He first entered the area of psychiatric nursing and then eventually found his calling as an oncology nurse. Although I have dreamed about following my father's career path since the seventh grade, my preference in specialization is to become an Obstetrics Nurse.
             As I began high school, I immediately prepared my course work with the plan of attending college for nursing and took classes such as Psychology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Pre-calculus. To gain more knowledge about this type of profession I has the opportunity to job shadow at Acadia Women's Health Clinic in Crowley under Dr. Michelle Owens and Nurse Practitioner Nicole Doucet.
             Through the job shadowing experience, I learned that there are many more opportunities available with a registered nursing degree and additional education. A Nurse Practitioner, such as Ms. Nicole Doucet, is an advanced academic and experienced registered nurse that has the ability to diagnose and management the treatment of illnesses with the assistance and guidance of a physician. Nurse Practitioners provide a cost effective means of medical treatment in the health care industry. Not all areas of the United States are accepting of this new profession.
