When I was six years old, my father made a major decision in his life that has ultimately influenced my life and the career goals that I have. After working in the business industry for nine years, he returned to college to pursue his dream of becoming a registered nurse. I remember sitting with him while he studied for his tests, and I even remember going with him on campus to speak with his professors. He eventually became a registered nurse, and through listening to his experiences, I began learning a lot about the nursing profession. He first entered the area of psychiatric nursing and then eventually found his calling as an oncology nurse. It would be a privilege for me to be part of these memories. According to the "National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses" there are an estimated 102,829 nurse practitioners. Nicole Doucet, is an advanced academic and experienced registered nurse that has the ability to diagnose and management the treatment of illnesses with the assistance and guidance of a physician. Of all of life's experiences, this is one that is truly never forgotten, and in fact, many mothers can recall just about every detail of their child's birth many years later. Not all areas of the United States are accepting of this new profession. With limited resources in certain areas of the United States, this is a logical and economical answer to the problems that exist in the health care industry. Through the job shadowing experience, I learned that there are many more opportunities available with a registered nursing degree and additional education. Nurse Practitioners have found acceptance a little easier in a clinical situation as opposed to entering into a private practice. Nurse Practitioners provide a cost effective means of medical treatment in the health care industry. Fortunately, these barriers are slowly opening the way to this new profession. As the patient population increases in the United States, this field will only expand. She had attempted to apply at many physician offices, but was informed that they were not interested in using Nurse Practitioners. If I decided to pursue a Nurse Practitioner license, my two preferences would be to eventually use my education and experience in either a women's health clinic or in midwifery.
