Brown Sugar is modern day love story between 2 friends, Dre (Taye Diggs) and Sidney (Sanaa Lathan) who can attribute their friendship and the launch of their careers to a single childhood moment--the day they discovered hip-hop on a New York street corner. Now some 15 years later, she is a revered music critic and he is a successful, though unfulfilled music executive. As they lay down the tracks toward their futures, hip-hop isn't the only thing that keeps them coming back to that moment on the corner that they both can't seem to forget, and a bond between them that is not as platonic as they would like to believe. What is the attraction that each couple has for each other? Dre and Sidney have an undeniable yet strange attraction for each other. Sidney and Dre are very successful in their careers, and it is apparently expressed throughout the movie. She shows him to realize within himself that Reese is not the right woman for him because of the difference between them. These buried treasures awesome, but yet symptomatic to the psychological problems and pain we see in the movie. Aching hearts because of the fear dishonesty, and bad timing that keeps them apart. What is the Family of Origin of each person? Brown Sugar focuses on the two central characters, Dre and Sidney, and does not give much insight or even a glimpse of their family members of family background. The FRIEND definition might never be attribute love and Dre, which later explains why she is so thrown off when she finally sees Dre in a more romantic view. Sidney is envious of Dre and Reese's relationship and seeks out something more significant, but soon she finds herself asking if he's mister right. Dre teaches Sidney how to tap into her own sense of self, by showing her how strong his love is for her, and how to conquer her fear of loving him too. Their similarities, wants, and needs are identical from a young age, and all the way till adulthood. Then finds himself trying to win, but loosing at the game of love with Sidney. Mere-Exposure Effect#- Liking people we are exposed to repeatedly takes place in Brown Sugar. The are very generous, and sincere with their positive reinforcements in career, relationships, or even their physical appearance. Sidney is a beautiful cocoa brown sister, with gorgeous curves, and a striking beauty that Dre gets a heavy dose of. For instance, throughout the movie the Dre and Sidney both display a lot of attachment, commitment, and self-disclosure problems when it comes to their true romantic emotions or feeling towards their relationship, and even each other. The first is their passion for hip hop.
