william wordsworth

William Wordsworth's Preface to Lyrical Ballad is the easiest and the most interesting treatise among the rest critics that I have read. It is so direct and simple and it represents his point of view very clearly defending the simple, plain and natural poetry that comes from the heart. I think most of his works are great since they came in a time when they really needed something like this in the industrial revolution era in England. I agree with his attack on the poetic diction because I think that poetry shouldn't be restricted to a certain rule that forces the poet to oblige himself to write according to the usual form of the poem and concentrate on the form, while he should be concentrating on the context and the feeling combined with the simplicity of the poem so that he can reach the audience pretty fast. I think that the elements of low and rustic life that we can see in his poems are the way to express his feeling and to show the true feelings of the heart and I truly agree with this idea because high class poems that deals with higher standards doesn't reach everyone in his age so he decided to write about the low and the original, ordinary life and it's relevance to nature, so to speak. I like his total defense for poetry when he praises the high standings of the poet that he's a man with a sensitive soul and a brilliant heart that can reach out other hearts, and again his definition of poetry gives credit to my opinion of natural poetry that comes from the heart which is natural and not affected by the elements of poetic diction and its forms.
